About the event

Given the increasingly collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of modern bioscience research, cultivating a positive and supportive research culture is paramount.

The UKRI Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council's eight strategically supported research institutes – the Babraham Institute, Earlham Institute, Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences, John Innes Centre, Pirbright Institute, Quadram Institute, Roslin Institute, and Rothamsted Research – collectively represent a portfolio of dynamic and diverse bioscience national capabilities.

Aligned with the BBSRC Institute Strategy, which emphasises the importance of fostering a positive research culture, the Earlham Institute, in collaboration with BBSRC and Institute partners, is hosting a cross-institute conference in connecting research culture.

This two-day event aims to facilitate knowledge sharing, network building, and the adoption of best practices in key areas.

The conference will encompass talks from experts working in the field, panel discussions, and breakout parallel sessions. Topics will include:

  • Research integrity

  • What does "good research culture" look like?

  • How senior leaders can foster positive culture change

  • Wellbeing and mental health challenges in the research environment

We will also be discussing three projects funded as part of the BBSRC Connecting Cultures Fund:

  1. Understanding, Valuing and Celebrating Neurodiversity, led by the John Innes Centre

  2. MentforMe, mentoring programme led by the Pirbright Institute

  3. Understanding mechanisms and best practice for evidence and reporting, led by the Roslin Institute

Who is this event for?

A representative cohort of delegates from each BBSRC-funded Institute will be nominated for invitation by their research institutes.

A total of 20 spaces will be filled from each of the eight BBSRC strategically funded institutes involved (the Pirbright Institute, the Babraham Institute, the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences, the John Innes Centre, the Quadram Institute, The Earlham Institute, the Roslin Institute, and Rothamsted Research).

Further places are available for BBSCR/UKRI staff and other academic staff by invitation.
