Biography
I am currently studying BSc Natural Sciences with a Placement Year at Durham University, focusing on Biology and Chemistry. My second year modules were Core Chemistry 2, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immune Systems and Microbiology.
I will be joining the Macaulay group for the duration of my Year in Industry here at Earlham Institute. My project focuses on applying single-cell genomics to forensic science as part of the SCAnDi (Single-cell and single molecule analysis for DNA identification) project.
Current forensic DNA recovery methods cannot identify the specific cell or molecule a DNA sample originated from, which could help trace its source, time and transfer, especially in higher-order mixed samples.
The Macaulay group has developed a protocol that combines cell imaging and sorting to isolate individual cells, and applies single-cell genomics to measure STR loci using both conventional and NGS methods. I will optimise this protocol by analysing artificial cell mixtures and testing various whole genome amplification and sequencing approaches.
In my free time, I like to play my instruments (viola, violin, piano (and kazoo)), tap dance and play volleyball.
