Applications are invited for a Commercialisation Manager to join the Business Development and Impact Group at the Earlham Institute, based in Norwich, UK.

About the Business Development and Impact Team

The Business Development and Impact Group (BDI) supports research and operational groups to develop new, and strengthen existing, areas of EI research and capabilities with significant commercialisation potential. We help to develop collaborative research and development projects with industry and public sector through consultancy, contract research, and grant funding. BDI manages processes, mechanisms, networks and relationships that support our colleagues to share their knowledge and realise the social and economic impact of our research. BDI is also delivering mentoring and training to EI colleagues to improve their confidence in working with industry and building of entrepreneurial mindset.

About the role

The role of the Commercialisation Manager is to support the Head of BDI in delivering Knowledge Exchange, Commercialisation, and Impact Strategies.

The main purpose of the job will be to drive commercialisation of our research, grow the entrepreneurial culture, and help the institute to secure new income.

The key aspects of the role fall into the following areas:

  • Develop a pipeline of commercialisation opportunities, and deliver commercialisation projects including through the delivery of services, contract research, collaborations with industry, licensing or spin out formation.
  • Contribute towards developing and maintaining IP portfolio.
  • Lead on developing efficient internal processes for commercial project management and administration.
  • Manage industry partnerships and key stakeholder relationships.
  • Raise awareness of our capabilities, expertise and service offerings among relevant external stakeholders.
  • Support the delivery of impact from our research through commercialisation and working with industry.
  • Support development of the KEC and entrepreneurial skills and culture.

The role will also support the delivery of wider impact outcomes and further added value for the Earlham Institute through developing partnerships with businesses, funders and investors, and reputational enhancement.

The ideal candidate:

Candidates should be educated to a degree level in life sciences, preferably at post-graduate level, or have significant and relevant work experience in the life science sector.

Candidates should have significant previous experience of working in ‘technology transfer’ roles, have practical understanding of product innovation and technology commercialisation processes, and have successfully led the commercialisation or implementation of technology or IP.

Candidates should possess considerable experience of supporting a portfolio of projects and processes associated with the commercialisation of research. Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, an ability to liaise with people at all levels of seniority, an ability to lead, negotiate, persuade and influence others, and a high degree of self-motivation, are core requirements for this position.

The successful applicant will bring their own experience, expertise and professional networks to help Earlham to deliver commercialisation activities and generate impact.  

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £44,500 to £55,000 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This is a full-time post for a contract of 24 months.
